Innovative software solutions & services
Overview
HSE is an Athens-based Information Technology Company that provides technology, applications and services to a wide variety of organizations in the banking, military, and government sectors. The Company has a strong presence in the Greek software market and a long tradition of technological innovation based on active participation in research projects in Greece and abroad.
In the market
HSE's ability to provide cutting-edge technology solutions to meet the needs of uncompromising clients is attested by its long and successful track record in the banking sector. Only recently, HSE was entrusted with developing the web portal and a web-based credit-card management IMS for PostCredit S.A., the credit-card handling subsidiary of Hellenic Postbank. Prior to that, HSE developed (and currently supports) the stock monitoring software in use internally at EuroBank, the largest and most dynamic private bank in Greece. It also developed a document management system specifically designed for the National Bank of Greece (NBG), the largest state-owned Greek bank, a solution tailored to the client's intricate procedures and requirements achieving user acceptance levels other solutions NBG tried failed to reach.
HSE has been a leading workflow and document management solution
provider in the Greek market thanks to its product line of
sophisticated, user friendly, and reliable products. The clientele
for HSE's solutions includes a number of private and public-sector
organisations including the Ministry of Defence, OTE (Hellenic
Telecominications Organisation) SA, AKTOR SA, ALTEC S.A., Prufrock
S.A., Steficon S.A., Metaxa S.A., Ideal Systems S.A., GNT S.A.,
Planning S.A., the National Meteoreological Service and
others.
HSE also has a long tradition of providing highly-specialised
custom information management systems. It has developed software
systems for the Ministry of Defence, OTE S.A., the largest company
in the telecommunications sector in Greece, and the Hellenic
Telecoms and Post Commission. It has participated in major
e-Government projects in Greece, for the Ministry of Interior and
major municipalities, and, in various forms of collaboration with
EXERGIA S.A., an international energy consultancy, numerous
projects for ministries and governmental organisations in the
fields of energy, waste, and environmental management throughout
Europe.
HSE has been an early adopter of open standards and technologies and an avid promoter of the Greek Electronic Government Interoperability Framework (e-GIF). Together with ATC, Greek Geeks, Microsoft Hellas, Oracle Hellas, Piraeus Bank, and Singular Logic, it forms the industry branch of the Greek Interoperability Council, a initiative bringing together industry and academia and aiming to promote the interoperability agenda in Greece, Europe, and beyond.
The company's ethos has guided its decision to supply source code to its clients, adopt open standards and good practices. HSE is not only concerned with producing good software, but also with maintaining an excellent relationship with its clients, big or small, not based on secret proprietary technology locking them to HSE solutions, but on trust. It is this ethos, together with its proven track record of beyond engineering excellence and its ability for forward thinking that has made HSE what it is today and guides its steps towards the future.
HSE research directions
HSE started out, effectively, as a spin-off of the National Technological University of Athens and as such it has actively fostered a lively research environment within its ranks. The goal of HSE is to promote commercially applicable technological innovation within HSE in a friendly, informal, and highly collaborative research environment.
One of the general directions HSE is moving towards, comes under the slogan 'understand the web'. Projects is this direction include:
- "Deconstruct": creation and evaluation of technology to reverse engineer the structure of dynamic sites template and component based sites is that of investigating.
- "Categorize": creation and evaluation of technology to categorise sites, pages, and parts of pages.
- "Parse": creation and evaluation of robust dynamic granularity syntactic analysis technology
- "Gr8": creation and evaluation of technology that helps turn the kind of text found on web-sites to a form current Natural Language Processing technology can process
- "SenseSense": creation and evaluation of technology that helps sense the intended sense (meaning) of a word within a particular context
- "NameNames": creation and evaluation of technology that helps separate out name of people, companies, places, chemical compounds etc.
- "FactFactory": creation and evaluation of technology that helps extract facts mentioned within a piece of text
- "ListenNow": creation and evaluation of technology based on Hidden Markov Models for turning sound streams to real-time transcripts of speech contained within them
Another general direction involves improving programming productivity and program efficiency through the adoption of the right technologies for the right tasks. For instance, HSE is developping 'ONTODBMS', an open-source .NET object-relational database management system using web-services as its client protocol and a web interface for its configuration. It provides performance that far surpasses that of the current major players in the SQL (RDBMS) server marker for a large number of possible applications and offers very clear benefits in terms of development time and security loophole avoidance. Current work involves adding peer-to-peer and traditional replication and fail-over capabilities, porting the system to Java and Objective C, and publishing the database format as an open standard.
Naturally, HSE has an active interest in the currently emerging cloud technologies. The current release of HSE's ADMA Documents has cloud-technology built-in, thanks to earlier work. HSE aims to become a leader in cloud solutions by addressing the key drawbacks of cloud technology in the areas of privacy, efficiency, and cost. For HSE, the pure HTML + JavaScript web browser is a fall-back user agent for the cloud and more specialised user agents or browser plug-ins are the way forward. HSE's strategy is not to become yet another remote data-center, but rather to produce software that takes advantage of what is there already in a clever, innovative way that meet the full gamut of needs people and businesses interested in cloud-based have, not merely what current cloud evangelists tell them they should have. In addition to the currently emerging view of the Internet cloud as a platform for the provision of services (at large remote datacenters), HSE is also interested in harnessing the power of individual PCs (peer-to-peer cloud formation) , social media, and the abundance of non-artificial intelligence on the Internet (as successfully utilised in the Galaxy Zoo and Wikipedia projects) in interesting and useful new applications, and the possibilities for entirely different ways of collaboration between people working on the same task that are emerging as part of the cloud revolution.
